My guest today is Dr. Sandra Scheinbaum. She is the founder and CEO of the Functional Medicine Coaching Academy, a program established in collaboration with The Institute for Functional Medicine. An IFM Certified Practitioner and licensed clinical psychologist with a Masters degree in learning disabilities, Dr. Scheinbaum has specialized in blending mind-body medicine with positive psychology and cognitive-behavior therapy for over 40 years.
She established a clinic for diagnosing and treating attention deficit disorders and also ran a clinic for treating panic and anxiety. Dr. Scheinbaum is a board-certified senior fellow in biofeedback, certified health coach and registered yoga instructor. She is the author of Stop Panic Attacks in 10 Easy Steps and How to Give Clients the Skills to Stop Panic Attacks, and conducted one of the first controlled studies of neurofeedback for the treatment of ADD.

My guest today is Dr. Jeffrey Bland. Dr. Bland has been an internationally recognized leader in the nutritional medicine field for over 35 years. A biochemist by training, Dr. Bland earned dual degrees in biology and chemistry from the University of California, Irvine, and completed his PhD in organic chemistry at the University of Oregon. Dr. Bland is a former professor of biochemistry at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington, and served as Director of Nutritional Research at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine in the early 1980’s, working directly with two-time Nobel Laureate Dr. Linus Pauling, who he considers his lifelong mentor.
Dr. Bland has authored five books on nutritional medicine for the healthcare professional and six books on nutrition and health for the general public including The Disease Delusion: Conquering the Causes of Chronic Illness for a Healthier, Longer, and Happier Life. Which I actually have a signed copy of and I’m going to explain at the end how you can have a chance to get this signed book.
Dr. Bland was the first member of the Board of Trustees of Bastyr University, the naturopathic medical school in Washington State. With his wife, Susan, Dr. Bland founded The Institute for Functional Medicine in 1991, a nonprofit organization focused on educating healthcare practitioners on effective approaches to treating and preventing chronic disease. He has provided lectures and medical education events to more than 250,000 health care providers in more than 50 countries.
His message has spread far and wide, and I’m excited to have him as my guest today.
In the interview today, Dr. Bland shares what inspired him to start The Institute for Functional Medicine and how functional medicine has come to impact so many people. We also discuss issues with the way most people look at and treat disease, including skin problems. He shares what he thinks is the single most important underlying factor behind skin issues as well as many other diseases. We also discuss diet fads, since he’s seen them come and go, and we even talk about his own daily schedule. We cover so much in this interview, so please enjoy. My guest is Dr. Srini Pillay, a Harvard-trained psychiatrist who is the former Director of the Outpatient Anxiety Disorders Program at McLean Hospital. After graduating as the top medical student in South Africa, he graduated from Harvard as the top award-winner during his psychiatric residency. After seventeen years of brain-imaging research at McLean Hospital, he is now widely sought out by the media as a mainstream psychiatry expert who can apply brain science to everyday psychological challenges to help deal with psychiatric issues especially as they relate to stress and anxiety. He is also well known in the self-development space. He has been featured on Oprah radio, CNN, Fox, The Boston Globe, the New York Times, and NPR.
Apart from his clinical practice, Srini also runs a world-renowned startup called NeuroBusiness Group that helps leaders apply brain science to further their personal and business goals. Current and past clients include The World Bank, IMF, UN, Coca-Cola, Pepsico, Lockheed Martin, Prudential and top tier consulting companies. As a doctor, musician, poet and consultant to biotechnology-based investment firms, Srini's approach to psychological challenges is biopsychosocial, research-based but informed mostly by his 25 years of clinical experience as a doctor. He was invited to the "Disasters and The World" group at a psychiatric think tank called “Group for Advancement of Psychiatry.” His current projects also involve intense work at the psychology and technology interface as well. Dr. Mitch Fleisher is a double board-certified family physician specializing in classical homeopathy, nutritional and botanical medicine, with over thirty years experience practicing integrative medicine. He attended Stanford University School of Medicine, during which time he began his homeopathic studies in 1975. Dr. Fleisher has served as an active member of the clinical faculty of the National Center for Homeopathy, a Clinical Instructor for the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center and at the Medical College of Virginia, where he has taught homeopathy in the complementary medicine programs.
